Living on the COMET

– 35mm Dolby Stereo 1:85
1993 by Kathy Smith 13 minutes-color-sound

The Comet is a metaphorical image - symbolizing the cycle of life, which links together and instigates a series of four dream sequences.

Created over a period of three years this film uses a recurring dream as a vehicle for examining and analyzing the various ways in which we interpret and evaluate the patterns of our lives and the world. The four functions identified in this piece are thinking, feeling, sensation and intuition. Each function allows us to experience a different reality and presents us with different interpretations of the same objects and events.

Approximately 7059 individual paintings and photographs of various layers and media exist for this film, created and directed in residence at Film Australia 1990-1993 by Kathy Smith.

Credits: Musical sound effects composed by Robert Sullivan, Sound FX recorded by Doug McMurdo, Final Mix George Hart. Producer Paul Humfress - Film Australia distributes this work only.
